New university receives accreditation from Nursing and Midwifery Council

ARU Peterborough has received approval from the Nursing and Midwifery Council for a pre-registration degree in Child Nursing. The course is full time and potential students start in September.

The course will prepare students for a career as a paediatric nurse through a combination of theory and practice including through placements with one of eight NHS Healthcare trust partners. Students are taught by registered and practicing tutors who can pass on the benefit of their knowledge and experience.

The new university building, on Peterborough’s Embankment, includes purpose-built nursing skills labs. These simulate many aspects of a hospital ward and familiarise students with sophisticated healthcare equipment.

Child Nursing is one of a number of Health and Social Care courses on offer at ARU Peterborough. Others include Adult Nursing, Associate Nursing, Midwifery, Public Health, Biomedical Science, Integrated Health and Social Care as well as Social Work and Primary Educations Studies.

Dr Esther Norton, Assistant Principal responsible for the Health courses at the new university, said:

“I’m delighted that our hard-working team have successfully achieved this important milestone. We have benefitted greatly from the ongoing support of ARU, who have a long and successful record of delivering Health courses across the East of England.”

“Nursing really is a job for life and our graduates, 100% of whom are employed within six months of graduation, are much in demand and pursue rewarding careers in a variety of fields.”

Professor Ross Renton, ARU Peterborough Principal, said:

“The validation of the Child Nursing degree by the Nursing and Midwifery Council means we can provide a local route to qualification and employment for people who want to work as paediatric nurses.

“ARU Peterborough was established with the aim of increasing opportunities for young people in and around the city, which has long been a higher education ‘cold spot’. Since 2020 we have worked closely with over 170 businesses and organisations to ensure the courses provided will deliver a pipeline of talented graduates with the skills needed by local employers.”

ARU Peterborough is a partnership between Anglia Ruskin University, the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority, and Peterborough City Council.

ARU Peterborough will open in September offering a wide range of courses from Business and Management, to Biomedical Science, to Engineering as well as a range of Degree Apprenticeships.

Places are still available to study at ARU Peterborough in September. In addition, a significant number of courses also offer a January 2023 start. For more information, visit aru.ac.uk/Peterborough
