Partnership with industry giant Kier will train civil engineers of the future

A new partnership between a FTSE 250 construction business and Anglia Ruskin University will allow future civil engineers to earn while they learn.

Employees of Kier, an infrastructure services, building, developments and housing group with 22,000 staff in the UK, were inducted on the BSc Hons Civil Engineering with Project Management degree apprenticeship at Anglia Ruskin’s Chelmsford campus this week.

Kier has entered into partnership with Anglia Ruskin following the success of the current Kier Degree programmes in Quantity Surveying and Construction Management and their growing Infrastructure, Utilities and Highways businesses.

The company chose Anglia Ruskin because of its experience in working with industry to provide bespoke, work-based courses on a block release basis, and running successful degree apprenticeships with other businesses. Anglia Ruskin also has a strong Built Environment provision in professionally accredited courses, and a dedicated, Degrees At Work team to provide a single point of contact for clients.

The latest degree apprenticeship provided by Anglia Ruskin is a four-year course, with a further 12 months for apprentices to prepare for a professional review, leading to incorporated Engineer status.

A total of 23 employees attended an induction day where they were taken through how the course is structured, met teaching staff and were introduced to their online learning resources.

The course is partly completed online and partly through four-week teaching blocks in Chelmsford.

Suparna Ghose, Principal Consultant for Anglia Ruskin University’s Degrees At Work team, said:

“Kier are at the forefront of apprenticeships and work-based education in their industry. Anglia Ruskin is proud to be partnering with Kier on the Civil Engineering Degree Apprenticeship – it will no doubt drive the growth of early talent into this important profession.”

Jordan Flint BEng, MSc CEng, FICE, FIStructE, Southern Services Design Manager for Kier, said:

“The new Kier degree apprenticeship with Anglia Ruskin is a fantastic development for both Kier and our new apprentices. It allows apprentices to learn on the job, at the same time as achieving academic success and then ultimately leading to professional qualifications.

“This is a great opportunity for the apprentice and will also ensure that Kier are in the best position to remain a market leader due to our highly skilled, qualified and motivated staff.”
