Cambridge Festival of Ideas ‘Hub’ day on 29 October will feature 22 events

The ninth Cambridge Festival of Ideas will be taking over Anglia Ruskin University next weekend, with a packed programme of talks, activities and events being held across the campus.

In addition to being one of the Cambridge Festival of Ideas sponsors, Saturday, 29 October will once again see Anglia Ruskin become the Festival Hub.

Amongst the 22 events taking place on campus is “The geography of romance”, where Viren Swami, Professor of Social Psychology at Anglia Ruskin, will discuss why location affects who we fall for and why.

Professor Swami, who has produced his own “London love map” as part of his research, said: “Internet dating has changed where we meet potential partners, but even online we favour people who are geographically close.  As well as making dating more convenient, we are attracted to people who are similar to us, and similar people are more likely to live nearby.”

Elsewhere, Dr Domenico Vicinanza will lead a talk examining how body movement can be converted into sound, using a technique called data sonification.

Dr Vicinanza and his colleagues are researching the various health benefits of sonification, and are developing a “smart glove” to help stroke patients with their rehabilitation.

Other events include “Transatlantic: They say! We say!” which will link up young writers from Cambridge and Houston for a live poetry performance, and Dr Sarah Kuppen, Senior Lecturer in Psychology, discussing “Opinions on parenting – how to sort the help from the hype”.

Miriam Berg, Public Engagement Officer at Anglia Ruskin, said:

“Our involvement in the Cambridge Festival of Ideas continues to grow and we expect that this year’s Festival Hub day will be the most diverse and exciting so far.  We have 22 talks and events taking place on campus, and there really is something for everyone.”
