Entry requirements

Academic entry requirements

for students coming from Hong Kong to ARU

For entry to a Bachelors degree (year 1), we will consider the following qualifications:

  • A recognised foundation programme
  • International Baccalaureate Diploma
  • International Advanced Levels (A Levels)
  • Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE): four core subjects and two electives with combination of Grade 3 and above to meet the UCAS Tariff points required;
  • Hong Kong Advanced Level (HKALE): comparable to UK A level and UCAS Tariff except maths and science subjects are compared a grade above in comparison to the UK A level;

For our BOptom (Hons) Optometry Year 1 entry, we accept:

  • HKDSE results equivalent of 136 UCAS tariff points, to include minimum of grade 5 in two subjects from Biology, Chemistry, Maths, Physics and a minimum of grade 4 in at least one other subject; International Baccalaureate with 24 points and above;
  • Hong Kong Higher Diploma in Ophthalmic Dispensing or Higher Diploma in Vision Health Care (awarded by Vocational Training Council, Hong Kong) with CGPA of over 3.0/4.0.

We accept Associate Degree from a Hong Kong higher education institution into our relevant 2nd or 3rd year undergraduate or top up programmes.

For entry to a Masters degree, we will consider the following qualifications:

  • A recognised pre-Masters course
  • University Bachelor's degree with minimum of 2:2 or equivalent.

For entry to a research degree, we will consider overseas qualifications equivalent to a UK Master’s degree. Please visit our postgraduate research pages for more information on the application requirements. 

The above is a guide only and not all qualifications are listed. There may be additional course requirements, such specific subjects or grades, a portfolio or an interview, for example. These requirements will be detailed on each individual course page.

If you don't hold one of the qualifications above, ARU College can help. ARU College provides foundation, first year and pre-Masters courses designed to prepare you for entry to your chosen degree.

English requirements

If English is not your first language you will need to be able to show you have the required level of English language. This is so we can ensure you'll be able to follow your course.

  • Our standard entry criteria for undergraduate courses is IELTS 6.0 or equivalent, with nothing lower than 5.5 in any of the four elements (listening, speaking, reading and writing).
  • Our standard entry criteria for postgraduate taught and postgraduate research courses is IELTS 6.5, with nothing lower than 5.5 in any of the four elements (listening, speaking, reading and writing).

If you don't meet our English language requirements, our Language Centre offers a range of courses which could help you achieve the level required for entry onto a degree course.
