Our English for University Studies course is designed for students who'd like to improve their English language. We focus on general English language skills, but also have classes on exam preparation and academic study skills.
If you're considering applying for a degree course at Anglia Ruskin (or another university) and want to improve your English language skills, our English for University Studies course is for you. We also welcome students who would like to take this course as a standalone English programme, for your own personal development. It's a great chance to study in the centre of Cambridge.
During the course, you'll develop your English language skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening. There is also an introduction to academic skills including note taking, formal written assignments, and seminar discussion. At the end of this course you can take the IELTS exam, so there are classes on IELTS preparation, too.
Classes usually consist of lecture-based lessons and one-to-one tutorials. Tutorials are a good opportunity to talk about your progress, and discuss any additional support you might need. Our students also carry out independent study, so you'll have full access to our multi-media language centre.
One of the features of our English for University Studies course is its social programme. This is a great chance to join a number of social events, learn about British culture, and practice your English in a friendly, informal environment.
Our English for University Studies runs full-time programme over a variety of durations, so you can study for 6 weeks up to 44 weeks. You'll study for 21 hours each week.

If you have applied for an academic course at Anglia Ruskin University or Cambridge Ruskin International College and meet the English language requirements, you will be able to progress directly onto your course.
If you need more support to meet the English language requirements, you may need to do a Pre-sessional English Course. In this case you might be booked on to a Secure English Language Test (SELT). There is no extra charge for this, though please note you will be responsible for covering all transfer costs to the SELT test centre.
Our Language Centre is here to support your academic success.
We offer a wide range of English courses, including academic and general English, summer programmes and bespoke courses, as well as in-sessional English language support. There's also the chance to learn an additional language with our Anglia Language Programme – open to all ARU students and staff.
You'll find a friendly, supportive teaching environment here with highly experienced and qualified teaching staff who are dedicated to helping you pursue your ambitions.
Complete the English for University Studies application form on this page, and email to email@example.com.
You'll also need to send us a copy of your English test. For international students we would recommend that you take an IELTS for entry onto the English for University Studies course. If you're applying from the EU we can accept other English tests; email firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
For the English for University Studies course, you will need to apply for a Short Term Study Visa (previously known as a Student Visitor Visa). If you're planning to continue onto a Pre-sessional course you may wish to apply for a Tier 4 visa.
You should be aged 18 or over at the start of this course.
The English for University Studies course is suitable for students with a minimum of IELTS 4.0 or above (we would not recommend this course for anyone with an IELTS of more than 6.5). As a general guide we would recommend the longer programmes for applicants with an IELTS range of 4.0-5.0, especially if you are planning to apply for an academic course. The shorter programmes are generally more suitable for applicants of an intermediate level.
