ARU’s Sustainable Futures Knowledge Exchange programme is supporting researchers to explore the emerging field of queer ecologies, including a writing retreat, seminar, and research project.
Queer ecology is an emerging field that brings together queer theory and ecological science. Researchers and writers are exploring possibilities for queering our understanding of the beyond-human world.
This project began with a writing retreat near Writtle, in February 2024. Writers worked on fiction inspired by queer ecologies, landscape change and climate futures. We then held a lunchtime seminar for ARU colleagues, and are now developing a new research project exploring queer approaches to scientific practice.
We’re also releasing a special issue of a literary magazine on this theme in July 2024.
