Students at the Heart of Knowledge Exchange (SHoKE) engages students in solving real social issues through partnerships with organisations like Essex Police, Essex County Council, and Cambridgeshire County Council. The focus areas include the environment, public health, and community safety.
This initiative aimed to improve health and wellbeing by training 24 local residents in community organising. The newly-trained group built a network of organisations collaborating to enhance healthcare access and delivery. Key improvements included better employability support and holistic services to help families thrive.
In partnership with Essex Police, Essex County Council, and Chelmsford City Council, this £20,000 project aimed to curb violence against women. Students proposed behaviour and attitude changes to enhance safety for women and girls.
Collaborating with Citizens UK and Council Elections Teams in Cambridge and Chelmsford, SHoKE facilitated voter registration for 120 students, empowering them to use their political voice for the first time.
"The students quickly gain the trust of the Challenge sponsors, fostering a sense of purpose, and bringing academic expertise and insight into each of the areas of focus. They are generous in sharing their ideas, expertise and understanding of interdependencies. Their findings and reports have been used in strategic design and delivery plans."
