Performing Arts student Zoe has been refining her creativity, self-confidence and resilience as a performer this semester... with a little help from The Simpsons and an apocalypse.
My name is Zoe Griffin, and I’m a second year performing arts student at ARU. As part of the module curriculum, we have had the opportunity to rehearse and perform a selected musical as part of the assessment. The particular project I am involved in is Mr Burns – A Post-Electric Play by Anne Washburn which illustrates a collapse of a post-apocalyptic civilisation, where a group of survivors plot to piece together the famous Simpsons episode Cape Feare entirely from memory.
Playing the role of a mischievous character, Nelson Muntz, and being a part of the chorus, has been both exciting and challenging.
I guess the complexity of the play has contributed to the 'challenging' side of things, but has also made the experience more stimulating and has allowed the cast and me to really bond when working together.
The rehearsal process has taken me on a journey of self-confidence, which is one of the many skills adopted throughout the experience: resilience being the main skill we’ve all had to utilise, as things tend to get a little steamy at times! Regardless, we all come out better as a result.
The progression of the play has allowed everyone to contribute our own personal ideas and creative suggestions, which reflects well on the different aspects of the performance, eg costume, props and set design in the University's Mumford Theatre.
My plans as a performer have changed and adapted throughout the last year or so at ARU, but overall the experience of Mr Burns has given me valuable skills and experience, which will be vital to my future career and work.
