The Leverhulme Trust has announced a major call intended to fund centres of excellent research. Each university in the UK is permitted to submit one application for up to £1 million per year for between five and ten years.

Funding may be used to pay for salaries (at least 75% of the award should be used to pay for research assistants, PGR students, and replacement teaching costs), and other costs including travel, equipment and consumables. All standard Leverhulme-eligible topics are applicable to this call, ie most ARU researchers could find themselves eligible. The Trust wishes to emphasise its desire to fund cross-disciplinary research 'embracing the sciences, social sciences and the humanities'.

Different models of centre are permissible for this call: Centres may be based at a single site, or have a central hub with 'spokes' at different universities or research centres. While ARU may lead only one application, ARU researchers may take part in applications from other universities as spokes.

In order to ensure we proceed with the best applications, any ARU academic considering this funding source should contact RIDO as soon as possible. If we receive several expressions of interest, we will carry out an internal assessment process to establish which project the university will support.

Contact RIDO by: 4pm, 22 September 2017

Deadline for outline application: 4pm, 9 January 2018

Deadline for full application (if invited): 4pm, 14 June 2018
