The Wellcome Trust has opened its call for applications to its prestigious postdoctoral funding scheme, The Sir Henry Wellcome Postdoctoral Fellowships.

These are generous awards, giving newly qualified post-docs the chance to cement their academic careers.

Awards are made to researchers in the health arena, be that at the lab bench or in influencing policy in health fields. Research questions are required to be within biomedicine or population health, and within the remit of the Trust. The scheme seeks to create research leaders by encouraging you to work:

  • "across disciplines,
  • in new research environments or sectors, and/or
  • in more than one research location."

Applicants are expected to have both a sponsor and a mentor at their host organisation, who will guide the proposal and the successful project. The sponsor acts as a kind of supervisor, and the mentor as a supporter from outside the field concerned.

Funding of up to £250,000 is available for up to four years (with part-time options). This allows for a salary, a personal supplement of £2,500 per year, and research expenses including consumables, fieldwork, travel and publications. Successful candidates may also apply for public engagement funds in order to achieve greater impact from their work.

The deadline for this call is 16 October 2017.
