Guin's debut novel earns national recognition

MA Creative Writing alumnus awarded ‘Book of the Month’ by The Times
Guinevere Glasfurd, an alumnus of our MA Creative Writing, had two great reasons to celebrate in January 2016. Her debut novel, The Words in My Hand, launched with a special event at Heffers in Cambridge, just days after being awarded ‘Book of the Month’ by The Times.
The Words in My Hand is a historical fiction based on Helena Jens, a 17th century Dutch maid who had an affair with philosopher René Descartes at, as Guin describes it, ‘a pivotal time in her life, and perhaps for a decade or more,’ but whose influence on his life was subsequently much overlooked by history.
The Times reviewer Antonio Senior described the book as ‘an entirely unsentimental love story, with a memorable and engaging heroine’, and said that Guin ‘takes the narrowness of Helena’s life and her kicks against its confines and spins them into an original tale.’
The Words in My Hands is published by Two Roads Books, and is available from all good booksellers including Amazon, as well as an audio version on Audible.
