Knowing how to use ‘the backchannel’ can ensure both in class and online students are kept engaged and responsive through simple chat-based activities. The use of breakout spaces allows students to deepen their engagement, for example by solving problems together. Collaborative writing and other techniques for the co-creation of knowledge can help to establish motivating research-informed active learning. The session focuses on how to set such techniques up.
