ARU is committed to gender equity, and holds an institutional silver Athena Swan award.
The Athena Swan Charter is Advance HE’s framework to improve gender equality within higher education and research. Established in 2005, Athena Swan is used worldwide to enable organisations to identify opportunities to address barriers and create a more inclusive university culture and experience for people of all genders.
ARU has been committed to the charter since 2012 and was first awarded an institutional bronze award in 2014. This was renewed in 2018.

We will now work through our Athena Swan Silver Action Plan 2024-2029. This action plan focuses on five key priorities that were identified through consultation with our colleagues and students.
Our Faculty of Science and Engineering received an Athena Swan Silver Award in February 2024. It previously held a Bronze Award.
The faculty is a hub for many of our science, technology and engineering courses – as well as world-leading research. As such, it's committed to the Athena Swan principles in STEMM (science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine) education and research.
Meanwhile our Faculty of Health, Medicine and Social Care received an Athena Swan Bronze Award in June 2025, and our Faculty of Business and Law was awarded a Bronze Award in February 2026.
