Overview

Prepare for academic study at Anglia Ruskin University. Our Pre-Sessional English course lasts between five and 20 weeks. By the end of the course you should feel confident communicating in English and ready to start your degree course. We also have a two-week programme to help students whose English is already at the level they need for their degree, but who want to improve their academic skills and be better prepared for study in the UK. Choose to study on campus or online.

Course content

Our online Pre-Sessional Course is an intensive, full-time programme, with 15 hours of online language lessons with our tutors each week, plus fifteen hours per week of supervised, guided activities for you to complete in your own time. 

You can also study face-to-face from with our on-campus Pre-Sessional. Our face-to-face course includes 21 hours of English and academic skills.  This includes classes on grammar and vocabulary, fluency, and pronunciation.  To support your academic skills you’ll attend classes on presentation skills, reading and listening, writing and exam preparation.   All classes will be taught in the context of academic study in a university environment. In 2021 this option will combine socially-distanced face-to-face tuition and online sessions.

Our online Pre-Sessional course will be assessed using several elements, rather than one final exam:

To give you confidence in our online Pre-Sessional English programme, we will give you give you additional weeks free of charge (up to the value of the online Pre-Sessional course that you originally booked) in the unlikely event of you failing to reach the level required to proceed in your study. Please contact us for full terms and conditions.

On arrival in the UK we will check your writing, speaking, listening and reading skills, to ensure that they are of a suitable level. We will then recommend any extra support that you may need to give you the best chance of success in your studies.

Our face-to-face Pre-Sessional course will be assessed using the English Language Proficiency Test (ELPT). Assessment will take place on campus in the final week of your course. More information about this test.

To progress onto your degree at Anglia Ruskin, you will need to successfully complete the Pre-sessional Course and meet the English language requirements for your course.

Before you apply for a pre-sessional course you must first have been made an offer for an academic course. 

For Face-to-Face Pre-Sessional courses, if your academic course is taught at Cambridge this is where you will study your pre-sessional course.  Similarly, if your academic course is in Chelmsford you will normally study your pre-sessional course in Chelmsford.

Studying your pre-sessional course on the same campus as your academic course will give you time to settle in and discover the campus facilities.   You will also get the opportunity to get to know the local area which will be your home for the next year or more.

How to apply

For both Online Pre-Sessional and Face-to-Face Pre-Sessional you will need to send us a copy of your English Test.

For Face-to-Face Pre-Sessional courses, please note that any student requiring a SELT for pre-sessional or study below degree level must ensure that they take their IELTS at an approved test centre. If you're applying from the EU, or if you're an International student applying for the Online Pre-Sessional course, we can accept other English tests.

Our published entry requirements are a guide only and based on a minimum entry. Your Pre-sessional offer will be based on the academic course you have applied for and individual scores of your English qualification.

  • For international students taking our online Pre-Sessional course we now accept a variety of English language tests as well as the Secure English Language Test (SELT)s that would be needed for visa purposes. We now recognise Duolinguo for entry onto a pre-sessional course, and are in the process of recognising other assessments. Please email lsu@aru.ac.uk for more details
  • If you are from the EU other English tests may also be accepted.
