Prepare for academic study at Anglia Ruskin University. Our Pre-sessional English course lasts between five and 20 weeks. By the end of the course you should feel confident communicating in English and ready to start your degree course.
This is an intensive language course that includes 22 hours of study every week. We focus on English language skills, with classes on grammar and vocabulary, fluency, and pronunciation.
We also look at academic study skills, and you'll attend classes on presentation skills, reading and listening, writing and exam preparation. There is a range of communicative seminars, workshops and lectures.
Our teaching methods are very interactive and will help to build your confidence in communicating in English. You’ll attend one-to-one tutorials to discuss your progress, and we can offer additional support if required.
Independent study is an important part of any degree course, so you'll have time to focus on developing this skill – with full access to our multi-media language centre.
You’ll also have the opportunity to join a variety of social events on and off campus. Our social events are organised to help you practice your English in a friendly environment.
Our Pre-Sessional Course is taught on our campus in Cambridge, so it's the perfect introduction to university life.

There is no teaching between 15-26 April 2019.
At the end of the Pre-sessional Course you will take our English Language Proficiency Test (ELPT).
The ELPT tests your writing, speaking, listening and reading skills. It gives you a score for each section as well as an overall score. You should not usually need to take any other English test.
To progress onto your degree at Anglia Ruskin, you will need to successfully complete the Pre-sessional Course and meet the English language requirements for your course.

Before you apply for a pre-sessional course you must first have been made an offer for an academic course. If your academic course is taught at Cambridge this is where you will study your pre-sessional course. Similarly if your academic course is in Chelmsford you will normally study your pre-sessional course in Chelmsford.
Studying your pre-sessional course on the same campus as your academic course will give you time to settle in and discover the campus facilities. You will also get the opportunity to get to know the local area which will be your home for the next year or more.
You will need to send us a copy of your English Test. Please note that any student requiring a SELT for pre-sessional or study below degree level must ensure that they take their IELTS at an approved test centre. Please note we can only accept students onto our Pre-sessional courses who've applied for a Tier 4 visa.
