Open days are the perfect opportunity to find out about everything ARU offers. Midwifery student Anna shares how virtual open days work and how to get the most from them.

1. Attend a talk about your course

Just because the Open Day is online, doesn't mean you can't attend a course talk. Whether these are live interactions or pre-recorded taster lectures,it's a must-do! A course, school or faculty talk is usually presented by course leaders and deputy heads in the form of a presentation and Q&A (if the talk is live). This helps you get to know familiar faces on your course, including future classmates if the event is live.

Save the link too if it’s a recorded session, you might miss something and need to come back later. That’s the great thing about recorded videos – you can revisit any time! And, if you’re torn between two courses, why not watch both talks and you’ll start to get a gut feeling about which is right fit for you and your future career.

These talks usually includes entry requirements; module information; placement information; other benefits of the course such as extra modules and support; assessment criteria; and UCAS code information.

2. Chat with lecturers and students

There will be drop-in sessions available online where you can chat to course lecturers and current students on a more personal level. It’s great at virtual open days, because everyone has confidence to ask their burning questions and that’s exactly what we want to help with. If it’s about your course, this is the place to get answers straight away and if we can’t answer it we will point you in the direction of our Info Hub chatroom where you can speak to Student Services, Money Advice, Admissions, Residential Services and more.

Talking to students who study your course can really help, too. They are honest about what to expect and how they find the course, and can even give you tips. They were once in your shoes and were likely feeling and thinking about the same things as you are – don’t be afraid to speak to us.

3. You can still explore the campus and facilities

We have videos and lots of pages to explore on our website during a Virtual Open Day which isn’t always necessarily available online on a normal day. Make the most of this opportunity and really dig into everything that’s available to you.

4. Come back again and again

Without the pressure of travel, planning or even having to leave the house, a virtual open day comes with lots of benefits. You can pop back onto the website throughout the time the virtual event is on (and at any future open days) to revisit videos, ask more questions and keep talking to us. We really don’t mind 😊

The biggest thing: don't forget to enjoy the moment and have fun on the day.

Come and explore
