This case study highlights the experiences of three businesses—Adiuvo Engineering, Antobot, and Japeto—that have benefited from ARU interns.
Adam Taylor, Founder of Adiuvo Engineering, shared his experience with ARU intern Tadiwa, who worked on FPGA design for Adiuvo’s new product. This project was crucial as it involved developing functional designs integral to the product's success. Adam praised Tadiwa's performance, stating,
"Excellent, as one would expect from ARU."
He highlighted the exceptional benefit of having a research intern, noting that it enabled him to focus on other aspects of the business during a busy month while allowing the intern to gain skills in an area of interest. The internship resulted in usable functional designs showcasing the direct impact of Tadiwa's work. Adam emphasized the consistent high performance of ARU interns, saying,
"Every ARU intern or graduate I have had has performed exceptionally. Much better than those I have had from other institutions."
Mart Magi, Head of Robotics at Antobot also shared his positive experience with two interns, Samira and Salina. Salina focused on UX design, updating the Human-Machine Interface (HMI) for Antobot's robots. Samira conducted a UV effectiveness study, performing literature reviews and field testing. Mart was impressed with both interns, noting that Salina worked well with their HMI updates and that her new designs would now be implemented on all robots over the summer. Samira established an improved test procedure and provided valuable suggestions for improvements. Mart was impressed that both interns were able to work to independently and deliver excellent outcomes, stating,
"Our main constraint as a business is often time. The Arise Internship scheme was excellent for us since our inputs were minimal, but outcomes very good."
The business gained confidence in their UV protocols and improved HMI designs, which will soon be implemented. Mart also valued Arise's sponsorship of the students, which minimized the financial costs to the business.
Jamie Tidman CTO of Japeto shared his experience with Uzair, an intern who developed an algorithm to create a "health score" for conversations in chatbots Including the NHS Sexual Health Chatbot. This involved sentiment analysis, user feedback, and natural language understanding. Jamie was highly satisfied with Uzair's work, stating that Uzair was very responsive to initial feedback and worked quickly, completing the bulk of the project ahead of time. The final algorithm performed very well. Jamie highlighted the value of Uzair's analytics expertise, which pushed the business towards automating their analytics and improving their data collection processes. The new algorithm significantly improved the chatbot's performance, making it easier to identify and resolve issues. The internship also generated ideas for further improvements based on machine learning. Jamie reflected on the positive experience, noting,
"Working with Uzair was great... Analytics expertise from Uzair were valuable to us as we have not approached this part of our process in a data-driven way. "
A research and innovation intern is a student or recent graduate who supports a company's projects by conducting research, analysing data, and developing innovative solutions.
