Our Senior Leader Apprenticeship (SLA) course offers an exciting opportunity to develop and hone your leadership skills, make a real impact in the workplace, and support your future career aspirations. The course is ideal if you are new to a leadership or senior management role and applicable to a wide range of settings across the public, private or third sectors and in all areas of the economy. You will study a Postgraduate Diploma in Management and Leadership while you work, with no tuition fees and achieve Senior Leader status.

Whether you are aspiring to become a professional manager or you already have some leadership experience, our Senior Leader Apprenticeship will arm you with the professional skills you need to enhance your leadership career.

The content and delivery of our degree has been designed to equip you with core leadership skills and knowledge to make an increased contribution within your workplace.

Modules & assessment

  • Corporate Governance and Risk Management
    In an environment of volatility and change in markets, understanding sources of risk and having a risk management strategy in place are major sources of competitive advantage. Indeed, viewing risk from global and cross-sector perspectives can enable corporations to build strategic initiatives and a skills base which assists with their ability to implement a structured and risk management approach that is practically aligned to their sector’s needs, clients and their own corporate appetite for risk. Against this background, the module has been designed to encourage you to contextualise your own learning and workplace practice within the context of different organisational environments that are influenced by a variety of external and internal risks, including corporate governance challenges, which impact risk-management strategy and mitigating activities.
  • Leadership and Change in the Corporate Environment
    The design and delivery of this module will facilitate the development of your ability to apply, reflect and evaluate theory in practice, and develop your own understanding of leadership and change within your own workplace. The module will provide you with a greater understanding of the various roles and responsibilities involved in leading a change initiative and with the focus on specific areas such as leadership and management development, and practice-based evidence, you will develop the knowledge and skills to better manage day-to-day initiatives.
  • HRM for Leadership and Management in a Global Context
    This module sets out to investigate the challenges of Human Resource Management [HRM] practices and policies for managers and leaders who are working in a global environment. You will be encouraged to consider this from a variety of perspectives, including the consideration of how the application of HRM varies depending on location and context, and how the management and leadership of people differs when operating in more than one country. The module will focus on key global challenges, including economic, political and social events, diversity and inclusion and talent management. The module will draw on relevant and contemporary case studies to illustrate these issues from a practical perspective.
  • Strategy and Information Management
    The module has been designed to provide you with a critical understanding of the fundamental links between strategy and information management. In a business environment, leaders, in all sectors, need to have the skill set and knowledge base to align business strategy with information management, enabling growth and success. The module draws on interdisciplinary strategies, theory and practical case studies to build a strong foundation from which you will acquire the necessary skills to manage information in a digital world where the accessibility and evaluation of information is growing in faster and more intuitive ways.
  • Global and Strategic Issues in Leadership and Management
    This module aims to develop individuals who can lead and manage across a range of organisations and sectors. You will be able to demonstrate the ability to successfully and ethically engage with strategic decision making, as well as formulate and critically evaluate strategic, tactical and operational aspects of a business. The module will provide you with the knowledge, skills and behaviours to become a strategic leader and focus on developing your capabilities to execute, and lead a defined strategy that sustains the business or organisation in the dynamic changing environment.
  • International Marketing and Brand Management in the Corporate Environment
    This module has been designed to facilitate understanding, knowledge and critical appreciation of theory and practice in the context of formulating and designing marketing strategies for companies entering international markets or operating globally. The module will focus on investigating the influences on international marketing strategy from both the micro and macro business environments, the challenges posed by having to adapt product/service offerings to meet individual market needs, as well as understanding how best to exploit opportunities from emerging markets. Consideration will be given to digital technology and the links to brand messages through the creation of new media channels and social networks. Relationships between brands and their customers have become arguably more open-ended as face-to-face interaction has been replaced or added to by online discussions which extend the brand experience outside of the initial purchasing environment. You will be required to ground these debates in practice, experience and critical reflection using appropriate subject and marketing theories.
  • Managing Disruptive Innovation
    Disruptive innovation is impacting virtually every industry and sector, be that the creative industries, financial services, manufacturing, music and film, and even agriculture. Every sector has felt its effects and digitization and automation are transforming industries, labour markets and the global economy. Globalisation has removed geographic and market boundaries and the ability for a company to innovate, to tap fresh ideas and realise their potential is now becoming a core driver for growth, performance and productivity. Companies such as Uber are evidently challenging historical business models and redefining the competitive landscape of their industries, meaning that the harnessing of disruptive technologies is critical to drive rapid innovation and maintain relevance in a competitive marketplace.
  • Managing Profitability, Liquidity and Asset Utilisation
    In making any business decision, understanding the financial consequences of these decisions is critical. Therefore, broad management understanding of the main financial performance measures, and how these are calculated and interpreted is a critical success factor for any organisation, whether that organisation be in the public or private sector. Against this background, the module has been designed to engage you in theoretical and practical financial analysis to debate and reflect on the role that profitability, liquidity and asset utilisation has on a company’s overall financial performance and long-term sustainability.

Assessment

On-programme assessments will consist of 3000-word written assignments which are all work-based in nature.

To achieve the full apprenticeship, apprentices must complete the End Point Assessment. The apprentice must have met all of the gateway requirements which are approved by the training provider and the employer must confirm that the apprentice is working at or above the level of the occupational standard.

The assessment strategy used for the End Point Assessment is as follows:

  1. Strategic Business Proposal, presentation and questioning.
  2. Professional discussion underpinned by a portfolio of evidence.

Performance in the End Point Assessment will determine the apprenticeship grade of fail, pass or distinction.

Where can I study?

Your study blocks will take place face to face at corporate venues, such as hotels and conference centres in Cambridge and Chelmsford. The venue will be subject to recruitment numbers.

Main

  • An undergraduate degree from a UK university, normally a 2:1 or above; OR an academic or professional qualification that is equivalent in breadth and depth to a UK honours degree.
  • You will also need GCSE English and Maths at grades C or above. ESFA approved Level 2 Maths and English qualifications are mandatory and must be completed prior to the start of the course. If you do not have GCSE Maths and English, you must ensure you complete Level 2 functional skills prior to the start of the course.   • If you have relevant work experience in a post of management or professional responsibility over an extended period of time but do not hold an academic or professional qualification, we still encourage you to apply as all applications are considered on an individual basis.
  • Degree Apprenticeships are financed between the Government and employers, so you will need to be employed under a permanent contract by an organisation to apply for this course.
  • You will also need a suitable computer with internet connection, together with sufficient IT competence to make effective use of word processing, internet and email.
  • If English is not your first language, you will be expected to demonstrate a certified level of proficiency of at least IELTS 6.5 or equivalent; OR you can provide satisfactory evidence that you have been taught and examined through the medium of English.
