Women’s Football & Futsal (Cambridge)
Winner: Women’s Football & Futsal (Cambridge)
The Women’s Football and Futsal Club have seen a significant improvement both on and off the pitch over the last 12-months.
Following a difficult period, which resulted in the football team being withdrawn from the league at the end of last year, a change was made that saw the football team merged with the futsal team to create one-club. Since then the reversal in fortunes has been remarkable.
Across the season the football and futsal teams played a combined total of 16 BUCS league fixtures and only lost one of these matches. As a result of this impressive run of results the futsal team finished top of their league and gained promotion. The football team, who’d been withdrawn from competition just 12-months ago, finished a commendable 3rd, losing only 1 match to the eventual league winners. They had some notable wins along the way, including a 10-0 win in their first game of the season.
The resurgence in form has come from a fresh enthusiasm, commitment and drive from the committee, going above and beyond to create an inclusive and vibrant club with a large presence at Freshers Fayre and always willing to participate in other Team ARU and university events.
Individual members’ contribution to the club have also proven how important that their influence can be even if unable to compete on the field. Doug Cosnett nominee Becks Archibald is a shining example of this, since suffering a serious injury, she has taken on a coaching role in which she has thrived. This has led to a significant increase in membership which has enabled them to successfully field a team for every match which in previous seasons has been a significant hurdle. As well as being an active presence on campus, they have also been extremely active on social media, increasing engagement across all platforms by generating varied content on a weekly basis.
The club has achieved excellent results this year and now has a firm structure in place to continue its progress next year.
