Exit counseling

Exit counseling provides important information to prepare you to repay your federal student loan(s).

If you have received a subsidized, unsubsidized or PLUS loan under the Direct Loan Program or the FFEL Program, you must complete exit counseling each time you:

  • drop below half-time enrollment
  • graduate
  • leave school.

The entire counseling process must be completed in a single session. Exit counseling should be completed via StudentAid. Most people complete counseling in 20-30 minutes. You will need:

  • your verified FSA ID
  • details on your income, financial aid, and living expenses
  • names, addresses, email addresses and phone numbers, including the names, addresses, email addresses and phone numbers of your references.

Any student who fails to complete exit counseling via StudentAid will be emailed a copy of the exit counseling guide, produced by the US Department of Education.
