Medical Technology Laboratory

The Medical Technology Laboratory hosts research projects that aim to promote early diagnosis and improve monitoring of a range of medical conditions.

Currently, the main focus of the laboratory is to tackle the problem of poorly measured respiratory rate by development of low cost and scalable devices for measurement of this vital sign. The importance of this is that the breathing rate commonly changes early when a patient’s condition deteriorates.

Past projects have included early detection and confirmation of the onset of labour in childbirth, cuffless measurement of blood pressure and the assessment of coronary artery disease using MRI scan images, which was undertaken by an undergraduate student who won a Royal Society of Biology prize for best project.

The laboratory promotes and hosts projects that arise from the ideas of undergraduate students.
