Understanding musculoskeletal ageing

There is an increasing demand for understanding musculoskeletal ageing and other age-related diseases. The healthcare implications are massive, with musculoskeletal disorders including osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, bone and muscle wasting disorders being the leading cause of chronic disability worldwide. Conventional treatments are palliative due to limited understanding of the underpinning mechanisms. Therefore, we require new paradigms to identify those at risk of osteoarthritis, bone wasting disorders, sarcopenia and other age-related disorders to deliver personalised interventions. Dr Jasmine Samvelyan, Anglia Ruskin University, presents her recent research aimed to transform understanding of musculoskeletal ageing and age-related disease aetiopathogenesis, and pave the way to a better quality of life for everyone.

Dr Samvelyan is a Lecturer in Biomedical Science, School of Medicine, Anglia Ruskin University. She has a degree in Biomedical Science, The University of Sheffield, PhD at the Medical Research Council - Versus Arthritis Centre for Integrated Research into Musculoskeletal Ageing (CIMA), The University of Sheffield, Newcastle University and University of Liverpool. Dr Samvelyan was awarded a Master of Research in musculoskeletal ageing at the CIMA. She studied the effects of ageing on musculoskeletal system to identify interventions that reduce deleterious effects of ageing on the skeleton. Dr Samvelyan was awarded a Medical Research Council funded research fellowship in osteoarthritis at University of Brighton. Dr Samvelyan was invited to Her Majesty’s Garden Party at Buckingham Palace for her continued volunteering work at the NHS and community activities.
