The first ever Big Games Challenge kicked off in March 2017, with prospective participants invited to submit their ideas on solving problems or enhancing experiences within a particular sector using applied gaming, or gamification.
The theme for this inaugural Big Games Challenge was Exploring Local Culture and Heritage, which meant that challengers were required to consider the different opportunities and frustrations people might face living in and visiting the local area, and to provide concepts that would improve experiences for people in the region.
Five teams were invited to pitch their concepts at the Big Games Pitch in May, where they were also able to discuss and refine their concepts and pitches with REACTOR mentors, and to prepare for the judges’ questions.
Challengers attended a Concept Development Workshop on Friday 7 July, held at Madingley Hall, which provided an opportunity for the teams to get together and improve their products with the help of industry experts. Game producers and developers provided participants with some valuable support on improving their concepts, efficient pitching and some guidance on launching products successfully. Gill Hart from the National Gallery spoke about the Gallery’s digital engagement projects, and Antony Quinn from Polyzontal gave an inspiring keynote talk.
The most exciting event of the Big Games Challenge 2017 is still to come. At the end of the month – on Thursday 28 September from 10am – REACTOR is hosting the first Showcase event at The Junction, Cambridge. As well as the Big Games Challenge participants showcasing work, SMEs who have been involved with REACTOR in other ways during the initiative’s first year will be presenting their applied gaming concepts. There will be plenty of inspiring gamification concepts and products to hear about!
The event is free to attend and REACTOR welcomes SMEs, game industry colleagues and representatives from local tourism and heritage organisations, as well as anyone who has an interest in finding out more about the innovative uses of gamification.
