The Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) has announced a call entitled Engaging Environments.

This call aims to fund projects costing between £50,000 and £100,000 (at 80% FEC) that build capacity and establish consortia in public engagement. This call is Stage 1 of a two-stage process in which Stage 2 would require the successful teams to put together "one, ambitious, large-scale project that will achieve national impact and recognition in engaging the UK public with contemporary issues of environmental science". In other words, if you're successful in Stage 1 you will become part of a fascinating, reputation-boosting, public engagement project that has the potential to reach people across the country.

In order to be successful at Stage 1, your application should demonstrate "NERC's desired outcomes for this stage:

  1. Capacity to lead and deliver effective, national-scale public engagement with contemporary issues of environmental science through collaborations and partnerships that drive forward the debate and deliver innovative public engagement.
  2. Strengthened capacity within the environmental science research community and beyond in order to foster excellence in the quality of future public engagement activity."

Further details are available in the Announcement of Opportunity document available from the call page. If you're an environmental scientist interested in working with the public, this one is for you!

Closing date for outline proposals: 4pm, 25 July 2017
