Bernarda Alba

In January 2017, Year 2 students from our BA (Hons) Performing Arts course put on this music-theatre piece at Mumford Theatre as part of their assessed work.

With words and music by Michael John LaChiusa, Bernarda Alba was originally produced in 2006 by New York’s Lincoln Center Theatre. The work is based on Federico Garcia Lorca’s masterpiece The House of Bernarda Alba.

Set in the 1930s in a small village in rural Spain, it explores the religious and socioeconomic themes of the time, featuring a rich dramatic counterpoint as well as flamenco-sounding rhythms.
