The Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA) is an Act of Parliament that introduced a public 'right to know' in relation to public bodies. It provides a right of access to recorded information held by public bodies (such as Anglia Ruskin University).
The FOIA applies to more than 100,000 public authorities including Central Government departments, local authorities, schools, colleges and universities, the health service, the police and a range of other public bodies. The FOIA does not affect private sector organisations.
The FOIA gives people the right of access to information held by or on behalf of public authorities. It aims to give people a better understanding of how public authorities make decisions, carry out their duties and how they spend the public's money.
Any person can request information under the Act and this includes legal entities such as companies.
